Alpha Chi Omega is an organization devoted to promoting healthy relationships and spreading domestic violence awareness. We are passionate about empowering women and working to help those who have found themselves in a compromising relationship get back on their feet. As sisters we do this by volunteering at a local domestic violence shelter, to help those who have escaped their compromising relationship start their new lives. Domestic Violence is something that people all too often pretend doesn’t happen because it makes them feel uncomfortable. Domestic violence can happen to everyone - all races, all religions, all income and education levels. It’s everywhere. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime. The saddest part though is that the majority of victims will not report the abuse. They are embarrassed, ashamed, don’t want to look weak, want to protect or think they can help the other person; sometimes they may even convince themselves that they deserve the “love” they are receiving. Alpha Chi Omega works to build those affected by domestic violence backup. We are there to support victims as well as the services they seek to get help. In many other ways, we work to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault. We promote healthy relationships and educate our community about these issues. When I joined Alpha Chi Omega this sense of awareness hit home with me because I am a domestic violence survivor. It warms my heart to see that there are people out there, like my sisters, who are working to change the social issue of domestic violence and unhealthy relationships. Alpha Chi Omega is without a doubt a sisterhood of Real. Strong. Women.
